Unlike Tunisia, criticizing the government has generally been okay in Egypt. Egypt had a reasonable freedom of expression—but only an illusion of political freedom. Mubarak outlawed the largest opposition party, the Muslim Brotherhood and painted them as, essentially, terrorists and extremists.
